Progress

I currently use Todoist for all my to-dos, whether it be to remind me to clean, to work on an online class, or even to feed my fish. If a task is in my to do list, it will either get done or rescheduled for another time.

Using Todoist and having all my tasks in one place is super helpful. I still don’t know how I went through college without it.

My Problem(s):

I have a very hard time prioritizing personal projects / goals. I also often put too much weight behind perfecting the process and the potential end result. This led to me feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated.

This usually led me to surfing Reddit until the time I allocated for my projects has run out.

My Solution(s):

Pick one goal / project and just start. Well, if it was that easy, wouldn’t everyone do it?

In a perfect world, yes. This world will never be perfect. You have to find how you work best in this imperfect world we call home.

I started with weekly themes.

Now, that doesn’t mean that I’m going to complete the project in a weeks time. It means that I want to spend this week working on Project XYZ and any progress I make is better than no progress.

Weekly themes worked pretty well. But I found myself getting bored with weekly themes. Too much repetitive / themed tasks back to back made me not want to work on projects. Which led me to my latest solution.

I then switched to daily themes. Daily themes seem to work best for me.

I schedule 3 “project” days and 2 “free” days during the week. Weekends are free game and usually not planned. I do all my planning / scheduling on Sunday for the upcoming week, that way I don’t have to think about what I’m going to do.

Typical schedule:

  • Monday - Development (Code) Project
  • Tuesday - Learning / professional development (Udemy, Pluralsight, Lynda)
  • Wednesday - Free
  • Thursday - Blog / Writing Day
  • Friday - Free

Things to remember:

  • You are not a machine. People cannot work for an infinite amount of time without burnout. This will only cause you harm. Take a break and relax from time to time.
  • Don't schedule all your "free" time. It leads to unhappiness and frustration.
  • When you are working on a project / goal. Eliminate all distractions (turn off your phone, social media, etc).
  • Enjoy the time you spend making progress on whatever you're trying to accomplish.

You can never make any progress, if you never start.
