Meditation was a joke for me, until I actually tried it.

I grew up in a household where you didn’t talk about your feelings or the things that were bothering you. If you had a problem you didn’t talk about it, you merely held it in and went about your day. Which I’m sure you can guess how well that went.

I’ve been using this way to cope with most things that I deemed as stressful for my entire life. I’d attempt to lock away these thoughts deep inside my brain or try to distract myself, so I didn’t have time to think about what was really bothering me.

You can only do that for so long until it starts to wear you down.

This is where meditation came in. I had been really stressed for a few weeks and couldn’t shake it, it was affecting my everything. I had always read articles about mindfulness and more specifically meditation and thought it to be hokey and just plain silly — how could deep breathing and “emptying your head” actually make you feel better? However, I was at the point where I was willing to try anything to destress.

I started reading more about meditation for beginners and landed on the calm.com meditation site. So I decided to try it. Calm is really great at giving you a wide variety of meditation practices for all skill levels as well as different meditation topics like stress, anxiety, and personal growth, just to name a few. I started out with their beginner course “7 Days of Calm” and once I finished that I really started to notice a difference in my day-to-day overall mood and stress levels.

They even have a feature in the app called “Sleep Stories” where if I’m having trouble falling asleep if I put one of the stories on, I’m out in a matter of minutes. They have narrators ranging from Stephen Fry to Bob Ross or Matthew McConaughey.

As of writing this in the last year, I’ve had 216 mindful days, with a total of 287 sessions, and 115 hrs of mindfulness minutes.

Now, I tend to use the Calm app every day or every other day sometimes it’s for meditation, other times it’s to help me fall asleep.
